DIGITAL MARKING GUIDE

How to mark handwritten exam papers digitally

A straightforward workflow that keeps the familiar paper exam while removing the carrying, sorting, arithmetic and filing.

The five-step workflow

  1. Scan or photograph the scripts. A copier PDF is fastest for a class set; clear phone photographs also work.
  2. Split and identify. Separate a combined PDF into student papers and match each script to your class list. Check uncertain OCR matches manually.
  3. Mark on screen. Use ticks, crosses, comments and mark values while keeping the mark scheme visible.
  4. Calculate automatically. Let the software total marks, apply grade boundaries and build question-level analysis.
  5. Return securely. Export or send each student their own annotated PDF.

What makes a good scan?

Does digital marking mean AI decides the marks?

No. It does not have to. Teacher Marking Assistant uses software to organise papers, speed up annotation and calculate results. The teacher remains responsible for interpreting the response and awarding marks. That distinction matters for accuracy, fairness and professional accountability.

Benefits beyond a lighter school bag

Digital scripts make question-by-question marking practical, keep annotations legible, reduce totalling errors and produce class analysis as a by-product of marking. You can spot a weak question across the whole class without copying scores into another spreadsheet.
